Stonehenge is probably the most important prehistoric monument in the whole of Britain and has attracted visitors from earliest times. It stands as a timeless monument to the people who built it. Stonehenge is located in Wiltshire, about 2 miles west of Amesbury and 8 miles north of Salisbury. It is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world. Currently Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage. This video shows the overall layout of the Stonehenge site and the different phases of its construction from the laying of the original stones c. 3100BCE to the last of the stone s c. 1600BCE. Exactly what Stonehenge was built for and a process that was an undertaking for nearly one and a half thousand years can only be speculated about however undoubtedly the solstices were involved given the rising and setting of the sun at Stonehenge at those times. |
