Ernest Shackleton ~ Sir Ernest Shackleton

Ernest Shackleton

Ernest Shackleton: Sir Ernest Shackleton is best known for his Endurance expedition to Antarctica, where Shackleton and his crew were trapped in pack ice for eleven months as discussed in The Lost World Discovered? at Violations. The trip was ultimately a failure as Ernest Shackleton and his crew never actually set foot on the Antarctica continent, however their resolve and sheer endurance and later rescue earned them international respect and admiration.

After Shakleton's boat was crushed by the ice, they were stranded on a floating iceberg - an iceberg that was drifting away from the frozen continent, and this iceberg was to become their home for a further five months until they landed on Elephant Island on 15th of April 1916.

Five years later he returned to the Antarctic as part of the Shackleton-Rowett expedition with a view to undertaking various surveying and scientific operation son the continet however whilst his ship was moored in Soutyh Georgia he had a heart attack and died aged just 47yrs.
